What is Interior Design?


Interior Design... for me is the art of combining the artistic side of life with the practcal part of living.  Making a space where you live, work, or play fun, functional, and enjoyable are all important elements, and thought about together will create a coheisive design.

Where do I begin?

I initally ask the homeowner about the space.  The more I know about you and the uses for the space will help in the complete design process.  Here are a few simple questions to get started.

What is the use of the room?
What do you want to accomplish in the room?
How do you feel when you are in this room?
How do you react when others come into the room?
Think of your 5 senses...

Eyes: What can you see? What do you want to see?
Nose: What can you smell?  What do you want to smell?
Mouth: Taste?  Can you taste something?
Ears: What sort of sound can you hear?  Is it NOISY? Soothing?
Touch:  What tactile elements are in the room... ?

Of course, Budget is always a question of concern and stress... I will always ask the homeowner to consider the full amount available, and prioritise what are wants, needs, and wishes.  This allows me to work with you to create a realistic goal.
What stays, what goes, what can be recycled or repurposed?
What can be done: by the homeowner, by friends, by a contractor?
What can be done: as a project now, as a project in the future?

And of course, here is the biggest question....  WHEN WOULD YOU LIKE THIS TO BE FINISHED?  IF you want a full home re-design/interior and more to be started and finished in a "28 minute t-v-program style" make-over-transformation that takes less than 1 week... then be prepared for all the challenges that go into a quick job and be prepared for all the side-effects.  Permits, Contractors, Equipment, Estimates, Installation, Back-Orders, etc... all these elements are HUGE variables in any project.  I will do my best to keep you on track, and keep your expectations on track too.  There are always "gotchas" and surprises...  understanding how to deal with those unexpected changes are part of the business... and finding creative solutions is part of my job... 

Homework...  Yes, Please do your homework.  Know as much as you can about what your are asking for.  Floor to Ceiling, Wall to Wall... I am happy to provide my opinion and input... and will listen and apply your thoughts, concerns, needs, wants and ideas to the concept of the design.  We will find solutions and creative ideas to complete the design process together...

A Little Inspiration...

What are some simple ways to change your view?  In your home or office?  Your Bedroom? Your Patio?  Or your Balcony?  What about your sofa, your dining room?   In 2024, without spending unnecessary time, money, or energy, we will be doing a complete renovation of the Gibson Gallery.   Art will be take down, inventoried, and reorganized. Walls will be cleaned up with some fresh paint.  Some curtains will be changed.  Seats in the dining room will be recovered. The bar stools were done last year and I'm happy with those colors, so will keep that earth tones and  Miscellaneous books and outdated knicknacks will be organized and stored.  Maybe it is time to box some things up for the kids (young adults) to store until they are in their own place(s).
